What are adrenal glands?
Adrenal glands are two triangular shaped glands located on the kidneys that consist of an outer cortex and an inner medulla. They are fairly small in size but very powerful and important in their tasks. They produce about 50 different hormones that are essential to optimum health.
The adrenal glands are responsible for producing hormones that affect 4 major things in your body—Salt, Sugar, Stress, and Sex.
- Salt – aldosterone production regulates your water and electrolytes
- Sugar – cortisol production regulates the glucose metabolism in your body
- Stress – adrenalin production regulates your stress response
- Sex – DHEA and various sex hormone production regulates sex hormone precursors and characteristics
Two major hormones produced by the adrenal glands are:
- Adrenalin – short-acting hormone, released in a time of stress or emergency
- Cortisol – long-acting hormone, released after adrenalin, which lasts longer to support the body after the stress response is over
They work hand in hand and are continuously secreted to help regulate different physiological functions.
What is Stress?
Stress can be physical or emotional. It may be positive (facilitating) or negative (debilitating), depending on how we interpret it and react to it. In any situation, however, the stress response (release of stress hormones) causes the body to react, and unless we learn how to take conscious control, this reaction disturbs the body’s normal physiological equilibrium. During stress our “fight-flight” response kicks in and it prepares the body to either face the threat and “fight” or flee by taking “flight” from a perceived attack.
When faced with a perceived danger, a very complicated response triggers the release of a hormonal cascade that impacts multiple organs in the body. Hormones like adrenalin, noradrenalin, and cortisol are secreted.
Our body is physically and psychologically prepared to react quickly in order to protect itself from the perceived enemy. This mechanism works well and helps us to survive in emergency situations.
Once the perceived threat is over, our body regulates the stress hormone production to reestablish balance and internal calm. Ideally, as the body returns to a state of calm, the heart rate returns to normal, blood pressure decreases, and our muscles relax—all in response to decreased anxiety as our mind becomes calm once again.
What is Adrenal Fatigue?
Unfortunately, our hectic modern life presents us with a series of small, constantly stressful situations. As noted above, our body reacts to each situation the same way; it doesn’t know the difference between “life threatening emergency situations” and “mild daily stress.”
Our adrenals are constantly working. If they don’t get a chance to rest, they eventually become imbalanced. Adrenal glands may become exhausted and unable to function properly, releasing suboptimal amounts of hormones.
This may potentially lead to disorders involving a hormonal imbalance or immune system dysfunction as is often seen in depression, which is expressed as an increased susceptibility to infections. Adrenal exhaustion can also cause chronic fatigue, allergies, and autoimmune disorders such as lupus and multiple sclerosis.
Adrenal glands may also become overactive and release hormones at inappropriate times, causing myriad symptoms including headaches, heart palpitations, anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure, and irritable bowel syndrome. Adrenal fatigue may also result from physiological conditions such as chronic illness or pain, sleep deprivation, chronic or acute infection, high sugar intake, strenuous exercise, undetected food sensitivities and depression.
Constant stress placed upon the body drains our adrenal glands, and this problem coupled with a stressful lifestyle predisposes a person to adrenal fatigue and exhaustion. Adrenal fatigue is not a medical condition called Adrenal insufficiency or Addison’s disease, which is a more serious medical condition, often caused by an auto-immune dysfunction of adrenal glands.
What Causes Adrenal Fatigue?
Adrenal dysfunction might be caused by imbalance of adrenal gland hormone production. It usually happens gradually as a response to chronic exposure to physiological stressors. Examples of this would be an overfilled schedule precluding the adequate intake of nutrients, a lifestyle that deprives us of enough sleep, and overexposure to emotional stressors, including our failure to take a few minutes for ourselves to meditate, stretch, and breathe deeply.
These factors combine to slowly drain our adrenal glands, resulting in the imbalanced production of hormones.
What are Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue?
Some of symptoms of adrenal dysfunction might include:
- Heart palpitations,
- Fatigue and tiredness,
- Joint and body aches,
- Weight loss or gain,
- Gastrointestinal issues such as bloating, constipation, nausea, indigestion, and reflux.
- Asthma, allergies or respiratory complaints
- Dark circles under the eyes
- Dry skin
- Extreme tiredness an hour after exercise
- Low blood pressure
- Low blood sugar
- Low sex drive
- Lower back pain
Diagnosing Adrenal Fatigue
If you suspect you may be suffering from adrenal dysfunction, we might need to order the following tests to confirm your condition:
- Saliva test to measure levels of cortisol, DHEA, and other hormones
- Blood test to measure thyroid levels of thyroid hormones such as TSH, free T3 and T4, total and reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies
- Fasting insulin and sugar levels with a 3–4 hour glucose tolerance test
- Other blood tests to measure your blood count, electrolytes, cholesterol levels, vitamin levels, and much more

To protect your adrenals, it is important to learn how to deal effectively with stressful situations. There are several things you can start doing today to relieve some of your stress:

- Quality sleep
- Sufficient exercise
- Eliminate the environmental toxins
First, it is important to nourish your body. Begin by eating high quality nourishing meals throughout the day. Try to eat fresh whole foods that are organic, including lots of fruits and vegetables.
Another important factor in healing adrenal fatigue is adequate, quality sleep. Sleep helps restore the body, improves metabolism and rejuvenates adrenals.
